What is ADAS?

ADAS - standing for Advanced Driver Assist Systems.

Incorporates the use of multiple systems to achieve a higher level of safety for the vehicle occupants, pedestrians and other motorist.

Systems include some or all of, Front radar (low, mid and long distance), ultrasonic sensors, Infrared cameras, LIDAR units, front mono or stereo cameras, rear Radar, distance ranging lasers, 360 and rear view cameras. These are some of the inputs to the vehicle that can help with; BSM blind spot monitor, ACC adaptive cruise control, Cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, Emergency braking,  and much more.

ADAS Calibration

When, Why and how?

When:

ADAS isn't like an SRS or ABS light that requires attention when its illuminated. Sure the system may have logged a fault and it requires immediate attention, repairs or recalibration. But it's more then that.

  • When your thrust angle has changed (suspension repairs or modifications, wheel alignment, collision repairs)
  • When a camera or radar has been remove and refitted for mechanical or collision repairs.
  • when ride height has changed (mainly for 4wds modifications).
  • When the vehicle has been in a accident
  • When a fault has been detected by the vehicles computers.
  • Windscreen removal or replacement

Why:

The Cameras and radars can usually operate within tolerances. But cant always correct themselves or know there has been a change from where they were. For example 2 degrees left or right at the sensor is 7.5mtrs off the road or into incoming traffic 250 meters down the road.

For this reason its essential for the safety of the vehicle, its occupants and other road users that these systems are calibrated to manufacture specifications when required.
